Humidifiers and Dehumidifiers

Bemis Humidifiers

Everything but in-duct

Now known as Bemis by Essick Air, these humidifiers cover almost any-sized room or home and use evaporative means almost exclusively.

A two-stage filter, available in some models, traps airborne particles and eliminates odors to prolong the life of the wick and prevent mineral dust. Filter replacements cost $10 to $20 (about $40 for the air purifier combination model). Special "Super Wicks" are meant to last longer before being replaced, which will cost around $20 and should be done about once a season. The company also sells a bacteriostatic treatment to control the growth of algae and bacteria.

Prices for the smaller models run around $50, with the whole-home humidifiers at around $200. A one-year warranty covers them all.

Dishwasher-safe parts are a plus. The smallest single-room humidifier covers up to 640 square feet, pumps out 2.7 gallons of moisture and has a one-gallon holding capacity.

Multi-purpose humidifiers

They hold 3.5 gallons and are dishwasher safe, but they're somewhat more limited than other models in looks. They come in basic white, with colored reservoirs, or black.

Bemis humidifiers get mainly excellent reviews from users, who say they are easy to use and who like the variable settings and water-level indicator. They are one of few products reviewers have commented on for being long-lasting.

On the other hand, some users complain of high prices, hard-to-find wicks and filters, noise level and heavy bottles. Some don't like that several filters and wicks need replacing and that it requires chemicals and regular cleaning. The fake wood on some has been called "cheesy," and tanks are said to often run empty.
